KTOO just wrapped up its Fall Fundraiser. The community raised $95,000 in support great programming and community radio. It was great to see a number of comments on the pledge cards expressing enthusiasm for the new radio stations coming on line.

Andy Kline, our new Co-Program Director, officially started full time in his position this week. Welcome Andy!

We received the music “library” for the station we are currently calling “Excellent Radio”. This is the mainstream station that will feature a good mix of top 40, new artists on the scene, college rock, etc. The library is on a hard drive and includes about 5,000 songs. We look forward to vastly expanding on this in the weeks and months to come.

We have lots of new volunteers! Jeff Brown and I trained close to 50 new radio volunteers this last month. These folks have all sorts of great ideas for new call-ins, debates, remotes, music shows, and other radio features.

The pace of things seems to have accelerated in the last couple of weeks.

Will Judy, KTOO’s IT Director, and I spent the afternoon in Gustavus yesterday doing a site visit and facilitating a town meeting. About 15 listeners joined us for a discussion about the upcoming radio changes and mapping out listening options for the community which will only be able to get one station due to an FCC translator freeze. Mike Atkins, owner of the Homeshore Cafe, was gracious enough to publicize and host the event.

Also this week, KTOO held its first listener discussion group. Participants represented a range of KTOO supporters, from casual listeners with particular program concerns, to core audience members and volunteer dj’s. The two hour conversation was lively and informative.

We continue to map out the three program schedules. They are still a work in progress but we plan on having what we feel are great schedules available for the public to respond to in the next couple of weeks.

Keep the comments and questions coming!

We are very happy to announce the hire of Andy Kline as KTOO’s new Co-Program Director. Andy’s been involved with the station for 18 years now in many different capacities: radio reporter, Midnight Caper’s DJ, volunteer for countless fundraisers and events, KTOO board member and commissioner on the Alaska Public Broadcasting Commission. Even before the possibility of his hire here, he was involved in the programming discussions for the new stations and has a great instinct about the Juneau listening audience. He brings alot of enthusiasm and passion for music and news to the job and will be a wonderful asset around here! He officially starts on October 2nd but will be engaged in the K3 planning before then.

It’s time for us to pick out call letters for the new stations!

It’s time for some creativity! What call signs do you think would work, and why? Here are some tips:

1) West of the Mississippi, all call signs start with the letter “K.

2) The obvious signs are probably taken, especially calls that spell a word, like KING or KTOP.

3) The calls we choose should be easy to say aloud. KWBW, for example, is really hard to say. KONE is easy to say (but it’s taken).

4) Often calls have place significance. KJUD, for example, stands for Juneau-Douglas. KTKU for Taku. KJNO for Juneau. KSTK stands for Stikine, and KFSK stands for fisk, which is Norwegian for fish.

5) Sometimes call signs are funny, or an inside joke. KCHU in Valdez is a sneeze. KWMD in Anchorage stands for “Weapon of Mass Discussion. The call letters KMXT stand for Michael X. Tremaine, the on-air name of the first manager.

6) The meaning of KTOO is somewhat vague, except that we’ve heard the founders liked KBOO in Portland.

7) If a call sign we like is taken by a TV, AM or LP station, we can ask their permission to use it for one of our FM stations. Likewise if a call is reserved by the Coast Guard, we can probably get it released.

E-mail your ideas using the comments form below, and we’ll check the FCC database to see if they are available!

Have fun…

Earlier this week CoastAlaska engineer Matt Holmes, and statewide contractor Bill Prendergast, came to Juneau to help map out our engineering and operational plans for the three stations. Our task is to wire each of our existing studios so that they can each function as independent stations with live and automated broadcasts, and serve as production spaces. Joining in on the meeting was KTOO’s broadcast engineer Carmelo D’Amico, KTOO’s IT Director, Will Judy, KTOO’s GM, Bill Legere, KTOO’s Operations Manager, Mike Sakarias and me! It was a very fun day of defining our needs and witnessing great technical minds at work!

We are thrilled to announce the hire of Mike Sakarias as our new Operations Manager for KTOO’s three stations. Mike brings more than 20 years of experience with KTOO to the position. He’s been a radio volunteer for nearly 15 years on a weekly show (Cross Currents and then Friends & Neighbors), as well as a substitute on several other shows and in the news blocks, he has produced station announcements for broadcast, and he helps with pledge drives and other special events. In addition to an extensive list of volunteer stints, he’s been on KTOO’s payroll as a vacation substitute for radio staff, and as an assistant to the engineering department for projects on the KTOO-FM tower and translator sites. He has also assited on numerous TV projects and is a professional sound engineer.

Mike’s interest in working for KTOO is centered around his desire to see the K3 project be a success. He will be in charge of the automation and program distribution systems for three stations. He’s excited to get started and his first day is August 1st. You are welcome to stop by and say hello!

License transfer applications filed with FCC

The K3 project moved a big step closer to reality today, when the FCC accepted for filing the applications to transfer the KFMG and KSRJ licenses to Capital Community Broadcasting. The filing starts a 90-day review period, during which the FCC will take public comment and process the application. We expect the FCC will approve the application in late October, after which we will close on the purchase of the stations. That puts the launch date at or about November 1st. Part of the application to the FCC is to convert the licenses to non-commercial status. If you have questions about the process, please feel free to contact us!

KTOO is starting its recruitment efforts for more volunteer DJ’s. As we shape the sound of the new stations, we want to emphasize that it will be influenced in no small part by the local folks like yourself who have a particular music passion and want to share it on the air. In the last few days I’ve gotten three e-mails from enthusiastic KTOO listeners with show ideas and wanting to be on the air. So far we have expressed interest in classic rock, live poetry, and, well, just about anything that allows this excited volunteer to come on down to the studio and play some music. We really are looking for all music types, so if you’ve ever had an inkling to DJ, please contact us and we can talk to you about it in more detail. Jazz, rave, top 40, country, reggae, blues, folk.....whatever your preference, we want you! Just fire off an e-mail below!
